From September 2002 to June 2008, the independent curatorial platform known as The Critique of Pure Reason produced music events for touring and local musicians and sound artists. These artists create music from folk to indie pop, electronica to experimental improv, and a fair amount in between. The Critique of Pure Reason produced something close to 200 shows (I am too lazy to count), hosting artists from more than 10 foreign countries, and bands and performers from all over the United States and Canada. Artists who played in the Critique of Pure Reason series were invited to take part in the Whitney Biennial, have been on the cover of Time (Canada), and have been nominated for a Grammy Award.

The Critique of Pure Reason existed to ensure that certain genres of music that might be un- or under-represented as live music in the Boston metropolitan area were given a fair chance to be heard. The audience for these events was also taken into consideration, with all-ages or 17+ events whenever possible; non-traditional venues, that put the emphasis on listening rather that socializing, were preferred for these events whenever possible. Critique of Pure Reason events took place in an art gallery, a cultural center, a bookstore, several churches, a record shop, clubs, an Irish pub, ICA/Boston, and both the Cambridge YMCA and YWCA.

The Critique of Pure Reason was curated and organized by Stacie Slotnick, who was voted "Best DIY Promoter" in the Boston Phoenix's 2005 and 2006 Readers' Poll.
